Research in practice

As a research group, we are at the heart of education, but also at the heart of the field. European Impact members conduct research commissioned by municipalities, organisations, and semi-governmental bodies. And this kind of practical research doesn't always result in a report that disappears into a dusty drawer somewhere. Sometimes our final product is much more practical: a targeted seminar or a hands-on workshop within the organisation itself.

Why research?

Organisations come to us when they encounter an EU-related problem. For example, when there is no overview of what legislation is coming from Brussels that is relevant to them. Or there are people within the organisation with the knowledge, but they do not know how to reach the right colleagues.

And we don't conduct this type of research solely for external organisations; The Hague University of Applied Sciences itself also has a European strategy that we research. And as interim liaison for the network of 20 universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands (UASNL), European Impact investigates how universities of applied sciences can exert more influence on European Union policy.

Practical support

Take a Dutch municipality as an example. They will soon have to implement new regulations on the circular economy. This will impact, for example, how waste is separated and collected within their municipality. European legislation is therefore being implemented at the municipal level.

This means that it is important for civil servants in this type of organisation to have the right skills and knowledge to perform this work effectively. Not every municipality, from small to large, always has this well-organised. This is where we provide training based on our research.
